Textbook collections/open stacks
The textbook collection contains borrowable copies of highly used study and examination literature on open shelves (access via the lending service Altstadt or on the 3rd floor of the branch library Neuenheim). Titles of books in the textbook collection can be searched in HEIDI or in the list of text book collections (PDF only in German).
Books in the textbook collections and in the open stack areas do not need to be requested online and may be accessed directly in the bookstacks. They will be booked to your library account at the lending desk at the exit. Books in the open stack areas of the Neuenheim branch can be ordered via HEIDI into the main library and vice versa. It is also possible to order items from the collections of the CATS Library or the Campus-Bibliothek Bergheim to be delivered to the main library Altstadt. However, this is not possible the other way round.
Closed stack area
If the item you would like to borrow is kept in the closed stack areas you must request it through HEIDI. If the item is available and the order was placed by noon (Monday - Friday) it is usually ready for collection from the lending area after 2:30 pm, otherwise it will be available on the next opening day. Media ordered after 12 pm on Fridays will be made available from 10:30 am on Monday at the earliest.
Requested items will be held for 5 days (Monday - Friday).
If the item has already been borrowed, you can find out through HEIDI how long it will be out and whether or not you can make a reservation. The item will be booked to your account upon collection in the lending area.
All shelf marks with information on location and accessibility can be found in the overview of shelf marks.
Self-service shelves
All media ordered or reserved can be picked up at the self-service shelves of the lending service on the 2nd floor in the main library Altstadt. The books are available under your UniID or your user number and can be collected and then taken to the lending desk during the opening hours of the lending service.
Non-borrowable items
Items from the non-borrowable part of the collection (those in the information centre Neuenheim (IZN), and the reading rooms of the main library Altstadt (LSA) and of the branch library Neuenheim (LSN)) are not available for use outside the library. It is, however, possible to borrow books in the reading rooms overnight or during bank holidays. All printed items published prior to 1880, such as rare books, art panels and journals are non-borrowable. These must be ordered and used in the reading rooms.
There is the possibility of guest use of the holdings in the reading rooms.
Reading room
If you do not intend to take the required items home with you, but want to consult them in the Altstadt reading room or the Neuenheim reading room, you have the option of choosing the particular reading room in HEIDI as branch library.
