24.7.2024Recherchieren mit dem HEIDI-Reiter „Artikel & mehr...“

Why is there a second tab ‘Articles & more...’ in HEIDI and can this replace research in specialised databases?

When displaying search results, HEIDI distinguishes between the HEIDI tab and the ‘Articles & more...’ tab. You can use this tab to search not only for books and journals, but also for articles in journals and anthologies, patents, newspaper articles and other publications. The data in the HEIDI tab comes from library catalogues and follows standardised rules. These guarantee a standardised presentation and filtering (e.g. according to classification or subject headings). The ‘Articles & more...’ tab is based on a so-called discovery system, in which the metadata is supplied by an external service provider and brought together from various sources with different categorisation rules. This discovery system bundles metadata from various providers of electronic full texts (e.g. publishers such as Elsevier, Springer or SAGE) and bibliographic databases such as LexisNexis, Historical Abstracts or MLA. The preset search currently includes approx. 225 million e-resources licensed by Heidelberg University Library. The results display offers various filter options and sorting options according to relevance or date. The search results can also be exported to reference management programmes such as EndNote or Citavi.

With the option ‘Add results beyond Heidelberg libraries collection’ you can currently search in approx. 5 billion data records. Please note that the document type newspaper article should be excluded for non-specific searches, as this accounts for approx. 70 per cent of the data records. As the ‘Articles & more...’ tab is a link system, you must use the ‘UB Heidelberg verfügbar?’ button to check whether you have access to the full text as a registered user. If the link resolver does not find an electronic reference, you should search for the parent title of the publication in which the dependent article appeared.

Does the search via the ‘Articles & more...’ tab replace the search in specialised databases such as the Année Philologique or the Philosopher's Index? If you already know the bibliographical details of an article or have a very specific topic, searching via ‘Articles & more...’ can quickly lead to good results. For thematic searches, however, we also recommend the use of (specialised) databases, as these offer even more complete bibliographical information and more in-depth subject indexing with classifications and keywords that enable precise filtering of the search results.
