Palatina pictura. Cataloguing and Art Historical Description of the Miniatures of the Latin Manuscripts from the Bibliotheca Palatina
The Bibliotheca Palatina is one of the most extensive collections of books worldwide that has gradually grown over the centuries, and is still preserved today. Due to its history, which meant that the entirety of its contents is divided up between two libraries – the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana and the Heidelberg University Library – its exploration by scholars has been relatively uneven and limited. Within the context of several projects, funded – amongst others – by the Stiftung Kulturgut Baden-Württemberg, over recent years the majority of codices within the Bibliotheca Palatina have been catalogued and indexed. The project for which we recently applied for funding is intended to complete the process of cataloguing the Bibliotheca Palatina by including also the book designs and illuminations (301 Latin manuscripts containing around 7,000 miniatures).
