Information for members of Heidelberg University on publishing in journals published by Springer Nature
The University of Heidelberg has joined the nationwide contract with Springer Nature, which was negotiated by the DEAL consortium. As a member of the University of Heidelberg you have access to the majority of the electronic journals offered by Springer Nature..
In addition, you can publish your scientific articles within the framework of the Open Access contract (with the exception of Nature journals). Your articles will be published under an open licence, preferably CC-BY. Further information on licensing in OA journals can be found here (German only). Detailed information on all types of CC licenses can be found here.
Within the framework of the DEAL contract with Springer Nature, all publications are subject to costs which are invoiced differently depending on the method of publication. There are the following two ways of publication:
- Hybrid Open Access or „Springer Open Choice“
Hybrid Open Access is the model for journals in which both Open Access and Closed Access can be chosen. If the Corresponding Author belongs to the University of Heidelberg the costs are covered by the university's contract; for the time being, authors will not incur any additional publication costs. To ensure that your article is indeed accessible without restriction, please select the option "Springer Open Choice" during the submission process. Further information for authors about "Springer Open Choice" can be found here. - Gold Open Access for “Springer Open„ and BMC
Gold Open Access means that the journal publishes only Open Access articles. As Corresponding Author, members of Heidelberg University will receive a 20 percent discount on the regular publication fees for "Springer Open" and BMC journals from the first day of August 2020 onwards. No discount is given for Nature and EMBO Gold Open Access journals. The publication costs for Gold Open Access journals are handled centrally by the University Library and the authors are subsequently invoiced via the University Library (amount including German tax). There is no central financing of the costs.
Please note that “non-research articles” (this includes e.g. "Editorial notes", "Book reviews", "Letters/Comments", "Reports") in Gold Open Access journals cannot be processed centrally via the DEAL contract and therefore the Authors are billed directly by the publisher in these cases.
Further information on publication in Gold Open Access at "Springer Open" can be found here. Additional information on publication in Gold Open Access at BMC can be found here.
The term of the agreement with Springer Nature is 5 years and ends on December 31, 2028.
